US Open Day 4

Andy Murray the Cincinnati winner in 2008 had to avoid a major scare against French man Michael Llodra. Murray won a tight match in 4 sets, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, 7-6.

Andy Murray will play Jurgen Melzer of Austria in the 3rd round. Melzer beat Jiri Vanek 6-0, 6-2, 6-2. Melzer looked impressive and is sure to give Murray a match.

US Open Day 3

2003 US Open champion Andy Roddick of the United States made an impressive start to his 2008 challenge beating the legend that is Fabrice Santoro of France. Santoro couldn't find any rhythm against the former world number 1 and Davis Cup champion from 2007. Roddick stormed through each set with 2 break in all of them winning 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.

Novak Djokovic who was a finalist in 2007 stormed through the first round of the US Open but may have picked up an injury to his ankle. Djokovic beat French Player Arnaud Clement in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.

US Open Day 2

Roger Federer the new world number 2 and former world number 1 made an impressive start to defending his crown at Flushing Meadows for the US Open. Federer beat Novak Djokovic to win the Us Open last year and destroyed Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3.

 

Marat Safin was pushed all the way by Vincent Spadea to win his first round battle in 5 sets. Safin, a former champion at Flushing Meadows was 2 sets to 1 up but Spadea took set 4, 6-4 before Fain took the 5th by the same score

 

 

US Open Day 1

Rafael Nadal kept up his amazing form in 2008 with a win over German Bjorn Phau in the first round of the US Open. Nadal won in 2 hours and 59 minutes, 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. Nadal was challenged far great than he would of liked but came through for a 71st win of 2008 and a 37th win on hard court's this year.

Andy Murray the British number 1 is also in the form of his life as he beat Sergio Roitman a clay courter from Argentina. Murray had to overcome heartbreak of a first round exit at the Beijing Olympics to win but he did it in fine form winning, 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 in a game which was always going the way of the man from Scotland. Murray next meets Michael Llodra of France who came through in 4 sets.   

Ninth Seed James Blake who came 4th in the Olympics (Losing to Novak Djokovic) came into the US open as a strong outsider. Blake was up against fellow countryman Donald Young. Blake went into the match as a strong favourite but struggled against the teenager. Blake eventually won 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Rafael Nadal Olympic Champion

Rafael Nadal who will be world number 1 on Monday made an incredible year for Spanish sport get even better. Nadal a two time grand slam winner in 2008(Roland Garros and Wimbledon) kept up his unbelievable form beating Fernando Gonzalez a two time medallist in Athens (Bronze in singles and Gold in Doubles when partnering Nicolas Massu). Novak Djokovic who was knocked out by eventual winner Rafael Nadal won the Bronze beating James Blake of the Unites States of America.

In the doubles Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka both top 10 singles players claimed gold as they beat Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson (former Australian Open singles winner) in 4 sets. Bob and Mike Bryan the number one doubles team on the ATP tour claimed the Bronze.
